Water and Sanitation in Africa and the Middle East Conference
2-3 September 2013

The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) for the advancement of science in developing countries Regional Office for Sub-Saharan Africa in collaboration with the Arab Regional Office of TWAS will organize “Water and Sanitation in Africa and the Middle East” 2-3 September 2013, at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, Alexandria, Egypt.

The main objective of the Conference is to build capacity and awareness on water and sanitation issues in Africa and the Middle East, and to propose solutions to existing barriers to address these issues.

Research Ethics and Commercialization Workshop

Research Ethics and Commercialization Workshop
24 - 26 September 2013

The Bibliotheca Alexandrina (BA) in cooperation with the Arab Regional Office for the World Academy of Sciences for the advancement of science in developing countries (TWAS-ARO), will continue its support towards young researchers by organizing the "Research Ethics and Commercialization" Workshop. The event will take place 24-26 September 2013, at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, Alexandria, Egypt.

The three-day workshop will provide a great opportunity for researchers through open discussions and recommendations on research ethics in the field of Applied Sciences. It shall also tackle Research Quality and Commercialization topics.

This Workshop will enable researchers to be acquainted with tools for efficient patent searches. There will be discussions on international and national Intellectual Property (IP) Laws in the Arab Region, and the impact of IP Laws on research and innovation and conducting research responsibly. The Workshop will also focus on Internet Laws and Digital Age problems.

The Arab Regional Office of the TWAS (TWAS-ARO) at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina will sponsor the travel and accommodation of 30 young Arab participants to attend this workshop.

Target Group:

Young Arab researchers who perform Cutting Edge Research within the fields of Life Sciences, Technology or Development.

  • An Arab national citizen
  • A young researcher, under the age of 40 years
  • Holds an MSc degree

Science Diplomacy Workshop

Science Diplomacy Workshop
9 - 13 December 2013

TWAS is inviting innovative young scientists, policymakers and diplomats from the developing world to apply to attend a science diplomacy workshop in December 2013 on the challenges of sustainable energy policies.

The application deadline is 15 September 2013.

The Workshop on Innovative Energy Policies for a Sustainable Future will be held from 9 to 13 December 2013 in Trieste, Italy. The event aims to open discussions between the scientific and policymaking communities to open avenues in which scientific knowledge can solve real-life problems in the South.

Developing Capacities for Teaching Responsible Science in the MENA Region: Refashioning Scientific Dialogue

Bibliotheca Alexandrina in cooperation with National Academy of Sciences are pleased to announce the release of the report "Developing Capacities for Teaching Responsible Science in the MENA Region: Refashioning Scientific Dialogue".

This report describes efforts to address dual use issues of science by developing institutes around the world. These institutes will help life sciences faculty learn how to teach about the responsible conduct of science.

Georg Forster Research Fellowships (HERMES)

Georg Forster Research Fellowships (HERMES)

Up to 80 Georg Forster Research Fellowships (HERMES) are given annually for highly qualified researchers from developing and emerging countries.
 
With the Georg Forster Research Fellowships (HERMES), the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation provides support for postdoctoral and experienced researchers from developing and emerging countries (excluding China and India) to carry out research projects with an academic host in Germany. Projects of relevance to development are eligible for sponsorship.

There are no quotas for specific subjects or countries of origin. Applicants are free to choose their research projects as well as their collaborative partners in Germany. Any academic actively working at a German research institution can become a host. Postdoctoral researchers may apply for a period of 6 to 24 months, experienced researchers for a period of 6 to 18 months (which can be divided into three stays).

Fellows receive 2,650 EUR and 3,150 EUR per month respectively, plus extensive additional benefits such as intensive language courses, family allowances, subsidies towards a pension plan and flexible alumni sponsorship.

The programme is financed by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and – subject to final confirmation – co-financed by the EU.

Applications may be submitted after 1 July 2013.

The Sawiris Foundation is pleased to present its 9th Annual Sawiris Cultural Award competition for the best literary works including novels, collections of short stories, screenplays, playwriting, and literary criticism.

Literary criticism is a new category that has been added this year to honor the outstanding critics.

Science Supercourse

Science Supercourse is a project jointly coordinated by Ismail Serageldin, Director of the Library of Alexandria, and Ronald Laporte, Director of the WHO Collaborating Center for Disease Monitoring and Telecommunications at the University of Pittsburgh.SSC Website

This effort was designed to improve information sharing among professionals and educators in four major fields of science: Public Health, Agriculture, Computer Engineering, and Environment. Lectures are shared in PowerPoint format to empower educators around the world.

The SSC is based on involving the community and encouraging professors and experts to participate by adding their own lectures to the website for the benefit of students and teachers everywhere.
