SCHOOL ON ALGEBRAIC APPROACH TO DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS

12 - 24 November 2007
Bibliotheca Alexandrina, Alexandria, Egypt

The Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) is organizing a School on "Algebraic Approach to Differential Equations" from 12 to 24 November 2007. The activity will be directed by Mohamed Darwish (Alexandria University, Egypt), Mohamed Fahmy (Al-Azhar University, Egypt), Lê Dung Tráng (ICTP, Italy), Mohamed Yousif (The American University in Cairo, Ohio State University at Lima).

The School will be organized in several mini-courses, including:

  • The ring of differential operators (F. Castro, Spain)
  • The sheaf D of differential operators and D-modules (L. Narvaez, Spain)
  • The theory in dimension 1 (L. Narvaez, Spain)
  • Bernstein Equation and functional equations (M. Granger, France)
  • Singular integrals and the stationary Phase methods (E. Delabaere, France)
  • Differentiable systems over the p-adic numbers (Z. Mebkhout, Paris)
  • Gauss-Manin connection and the hypergeometric equation (Lê D.T., Italy)
  • Hyperplane arrangements and generalisation of the hypergeometric equation (L. Paris, France)

A small Conference will be held at the end of the School and will gather F. Castro (University of Seville, Spain), E. Delabaere (University of Angers, France), M. Granger (University of Angers, France), Lê D.T. (ICTP), B. Malgrange (Academy of Sciences, France), Z. Mebkhout (CNRS, Paris), L. Narvaez (University of Seville, Spain), L. Paris (University of Dijon, France), B. Teissier (CNRS, Paris)

Limited funds are available for some research workers who are nationals of, and working in, a developing country in the Middle East area. As scarcity of funds allows travel to be granted only in a few exceptional cases, every effort should be made by candidates to secure support for their fares (or at least half fare) from their home country.

The closing date for the receipt of requests for participation is 30 May 2007

The Request for Participation Form is obtainable from the ICTP WWW Server:

Exchange Opportunity for Egyptian University Students

Exchange Opportunity for Egyptian University Students

An exchange opportunity for Egyptian University students has been announced: the Middle East Partnership Initiative Study of the U.S. Institute exchange programs, which are taking place this summer.
The program is aimed at first and second-year university students, and will last 6 weeks, from July 5 to August 19, 2007.

The primary objective of the institute is to develop and enhance leadership and problem-solving skills. The institute will consist of 4 weeks of classroom seminars and discussions at a university campus, pre-orientation in Washington DC, 2 weeks of travel through out the US, and interaction with their American peers. The U.S. colleges, universities or other educational institutions selected to host the programs will take steps to promote continuing connections and information exchanges among the students. There will be an alumni conference a year later.

For more details on the program and application form. Please check the following link: http://egypt.usembassy.gov/pa/mepiprog.htm

The deadline for this is Saturday, January 20, 2007.

Hard copies or electronic versions of the applications are accepted, addressed to the U.S. Embassy:
