Center for Special Studies and Programs (CSSP), a research center established in July 2003 in the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, aims to play a significant role in the progress of science and technology in Egypt. The CSSP will help researchers and scientists to get the best support needed to advance their work through international collaborations.

More than 220 young Egyptian postdoctoral researchers in the fields of Agricultural Sciences, Biology, Biochemistry& Biophysics, Chemistry, Engineering Sciences& Technologies, Earth Sciences, Information Technology, Mathematics, Medical Sciences and Physics& Astronomy have applied for the BA Research Grants offered annually to young Egyptian postdoctoral researchers by the Bibliotheca Alexandrina.

The BA has initiated this yearly program as a step towards scientific and research progress, in order to offer young Egyptian postdoctoral researchers the chance to transform their theories into reality. The grants are totally financed by the BA.

Research Grants 2006/2007 winners are:

"Computer Methods in Molecular Biology"

The online registration to the Bioinformatics workshop is now open. The workhsop will be held from the 8th to the 13th of December 2007 at the BA.

It is an intensive hands-on workshop that aims at creating a bridge of interaction amongst biologists, biochemists and computer science engineers, by exposing them to real cutting edge molecular biology computational techniques, as well as opening unprecedented opportunities to overcome current research challenges.

Prominent instructors in respective fields will highlight the present challenges and deliver solutions. Registration is limited to the first 20 registrants.

Nanotechnology Workshop ended

The CSSP is pleased to announce that the nanotechnology workshop ended with success.The workshop, organized by the CSSP, was held at the BA on the 2nd and 3rd September 2007.

The Workshop comprised five sessions daily over a period of two days, through which it focused on several topics including nanotechnology; nano-sciences and their applications in the fields of biology, chemistry, medicine, engineering, material science, and physics.

A total number of 90 participants attended the workshop, 50% of them were Postgraduate researchers, while 43% of the participants were Postdoctoral researchers. The workshop hot topic also attracted Undergraduate students who formed 7% of the attendees.

Dr. Mostafa's Lecture The CSSP featured the lecture "Small is Different: The Properties of Material as its Size is Reduced to the Nanometer Scale" held on the 4th of September 2007 at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina and was given by Professor Mostafa El-Sayed, Julius Brown Chair; Regent Professor; and Director of the Laser Dynamic Laboratory, Georgia Institute of Technology, USA.

The lecture was held on the 4th of September 2007 at the Multipurpose Hall, Bibliotheca Alexandrina Conference Center (BACC)

The lecture included more than 60 attendees who have expressed their pleasure in attending such enjoyable, constructive and professional session.

The lecture was open to the public and specially young Egyptian scientists who are interest in the field of Nanotechnology and were eager to benefit from Professor Mostafa El-Sayed's knowledge and expertise in the field.

Scientific Publishing

The CSSP in collaboration with the Library Sector at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, hosted a lecture titled " Guidelines for Scientific Publishing" held on the 5 th of September 2007 and was given by Carl Schwarz, Director of International Publishing Development, Elsevier. The lecture was held from 11:00-13:00 at the Auditorium, Bibliotheca Alexandrina.

The lecture was open to the public, researchers, and those interested in scientific publishing. The lecture presented Elsevier's - the leading scientific publisher -, view on scientific publishing. It included an overview of what scientific publishers and editors like and hate the most about authors manuscripts, and gave important publishing advices for authors to prepare a good manuscript for an international journal.

The lecture included more than 40 attendees who have expressed their pleasure in attending such valuable session.
