Center for Special Studies and Programs (CSSP), a research center established in July 2003 in the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, aims to play a significant role in the progress of science and technology in Egypt. The CSSP will help researchers and scientists to get the best support needed to advance their work through international collaborations.

 TWAS-ARO Young Arab Scientists (YAS) prize 2009

 In the Celebration of the year of Science and the year of Darwin, The Academy of Sciences for Developing World- Arab Regional Office (TWAS-ARO) is pleased to announce the 2009 Young Arab Scientists (YAS) prize in Biology and New Life Sciences.
 
TWAS-ARO prizes are aimed at recognizing and rewarding the scientific work carried out by Arab scientists who live and work in Arab countries.
 
This year the award will be given to an Arab Young Scientist who has major contributions in the field of biology and new life sciences. The prize holds a financial contribution of 3,000 USD.

The nominee should be:
 
1.     Native of an Arab country
2.     Lives and Works in an Arab Country
3.     Holds a PhD in biology, new life sciences or related fields
4.     Has remarkable contribution in her/his field
5.     Less than 40 years old by 1st of June 2009
 
The nominations will only be accepted and valid from:
1- Members of TWAS-ARO (
list available here)
2- Science Academies, National Research Councils, Universities, Scientific Institutions from the Arab Region, (a signed, stamped official nomination letter should be sent along with the nomination form, CV and list of publications to both the address and emails shown below)

N.B: self-nominations are not valid.

The nominations should be sent before the 1st of June 2009

The 6th World Life Sciences Forum, BioVision was held from 8 to 11 March 2009 at Lyon, France. The World Life Sciences Forum, BioVision is a unique international platform specifically designed to chart the progress of Life Sciences, within a strict ethical framework.

The Forum gathers high-level representatives from science, society at large, and industry, politics and international organizations in order for them to work in collaboration. 

 Dr. Ismail Sergageldin, director of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, at the "Biorobotics on the Move" sessionAs a continuation of the partnership between the BioVisionAlexandria and the World Life Sciences Forum, BioVision, that started in 2004, the Bibliotheca Alexandrina has co-organized two sessions within the program of BioVision Lyon 2009, titled “Ignored Aspects of Biodiversity” and “Biorobotics on the Move”. The two sessions took place on 10 March 2009 and were moderated by Dr. Ismail Serageldin, Director, Bibliotheca Alexandrina. The “Ignored Aspects of Biodiversity” session aimed at examining the various questions raised by the crisis of biodiversity.
As for the “Biorobotics on the Move” session, it shed light on the potential benefits of Biorobotics for our future and analyzed the various risks, as well as the social acceptance and ethics issues it raises.
 
 

The conference plenary session tilted “Facing The Challenges Of Expanding Cities”Dr. Ismail Sergageldin, director of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, at the plenary session featured several specialists, first rank actors in urban affairs as well as City officials. It aimed at offering a preliminary analysis of the crucial issues raised by this major transformation in the distribution of the world population, and of the dependence of these issues on further progress in life sciences and biotechnology. Dr. Ismail Serageldin represented Dr. Abdel Azeem Wazir, Governor of Cairo, during the session where he discussed  many questions and subjects related to the challenges facing mega cities of which Cairo is one of the major mega cities in the world.

BioVision.NXT 2009

BioVision.NXT 2009

Lyon, France

7-11 March 2009

This year, TWAS and the Bibliotheca Alexandrina selected 26 young scientists representing 10 countries from Africa and the Arab region to join the BioVision.NXT. class of 2009. The event took place from the 7-11 March, Lyon, France.

The Class of 2009 welcomed 90 young leaders coming from 30 countries: 37% from Europe, 19% from America, 15% from Africa, 12% from Asia, and 10% from the Middle East.

The Coffee with sessions organized during the Forum gave the opportunity to the BioVision.Nxt fellows to meet individually Nobel Laureates, leaders of industry, heads of major international institutions and NGOs.

TWAS also covered the transportation of the young researchers.
