CSSP Highlights of the Year

CSSP Highlights of the Year 2009
The CSSP would like to wish you a Happy New Year.
In 2009, the CSSP has organized many events. Whether these were conferences, workshops, or the launching of new projects, they all one way or another focused on science, how to channel it to boost develoing countries.

Many of those events were attended by eminent figures, among which were Prof. Vinton Cerf, Vice President and Chief Internet Evangelist for Google, and Prof. Gilbert Omenn, AAAS President, and Professor of Medicine, Genetics, and Public Health, University of Michigan who participated in the launching of the Science SuperCourse Project.
 
Sir Magdy Yakoub, Imperial College London Harefield Heart Science Centre, UK participated, in advising on setting up a "National Committee for Bioethics" during the Medical Research Council; Research Bioethics; and Food Security last July,
Prof. Mostafa El-Sayed, also contributed to the TWAS 5th Annual Meeting with a lecture about “Beating Cancer Cells with Gold Nanotechnology”.
It is also worth mentioning that Mr. Randal Keynes, Darwin’s Descendant and Charles Darwin Trust opened the Darwin’s Living Legacy Conference last November.

Regional BioSecurity Workshop
23-24 February 2009
The Workshop was co-organized with the Center for International and Security Studies at Maryland (CISSM), USA. It engaged a broad range of government, scientific, public health, academic, international security, and industry experts from the Middle East and North Africa on the issue of dual-use biotechnology research. 29 participants attended from Bahrain, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Switzerland, Syria, Tunisia, U.S.A, Yemen).

Transition to Sustainability Debate

Transition to Sustainability Debate: Mainstreaming Environment in Corporate Social Responsibility

An annual forum Co-organized with the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
The Debate sketched out the Arab voice on sustainability. A total number of 27 participants from, Egypt, Jordan, Oman, UAE , and Switzerland attended the forum.

Scientific Writing and Editing Workshop
20-29 July 2009
CSSP has organized an intensive workshop on scientific writing and editing which focused on emphasis on practical exercises in writing and editing different types of material (press releases, essays and scientific manuscripts). The workshop was attended by 10 participants.
Mr. Ehsan Masood, the workshop's instructor, is a writer and journalist in the United Kingdom.

Representatives from various countries met to help in advising on setting up a “National Commission of Bioethics” in Egypt. 30 attendies participated in the Meeting including Sir Magdy Yakoub, Imperial College London Harefield Heart Science Centre, UK and Prof. Mohamed Hassan, The Academy of Sciences for the Developing World (TWAS), Italy.

CSSP organized a "Get Together Lunch" for its former and current members to celebrate its 6th Anniversary. It was attended by the Board of CSSP Directors (Dr. Mohamed El-Faham, Dr. Asser Zaki, Dr. Salah Soliman and Dr. Yehia Halim).The event aimed at sharing the experience and accomplishments of former and current CSSP members.

Intellectual Property Rights and Development Workshop

27–28 September 2009The workshop was in collaboration with TWAS-ARO and BA legal department. It focused on Copyright issues and the different tools to access and disseminate knowledge in the Arab countries. A total of 42 participants attended.
The workshop took place in collaboration with the TWAS-ARO and BA legal Department. It covered the Intellectual Property Rights Fundamentals, with special focus on Health and Medicine. A total of 38 participants attended.

Darwin's Living Legacy: A Conference on Evolution and Society
14 - 16 November 2009 

In celebration of 200 years since the birth of Charles Darwin and 150 years since the publication of his book “ On the Origin of the Species”, the Bibliotheca Alexandrina and the British Council organized “Darwin's Living Legacy” conference.120 World-Renowned Academic Speakers from 36 countries and 449 Egyptian participants attended the conference .

Sustainable Development Indicators (SDI) Conference
07 - 08 December 2009
14 international experts in the SDI field and 192 participants attended the event, ranging from students, academia, media, and industry officials.

TWAS-ARO is the TWAS regional office for the Arab region and has been operating from the CSSP since its inauguration in 2005.

TWAS-ARO 5th Annual Meeting
“Science Supercourse: A new tool for knowledge dissemination in the Arab Region”
16 TWAS-ARO Members attended the meeting, among which 11 members gave lectures in the four fields of Science (Agriculture, Engineering, Environment and Health). On the whole, 4 Young Affiliates and 62 Academia attended the lectures.

“Biology and New Life Sciences” 
YAS Prize Winner of 2009 was Walid M. El-Sharoud, Assistant Professor of Microbiology, Food Safety & Microbial Physiology Laboratory, Faculty of Agriculture, Mansoura University, Mansoura, Egypt.

Science Supercourse Project
The Bibliotheca Alexandrina and the WHO Collaborating Centre, Pittsburgh, under the fund of the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), launched the Science Supercourse Project. It is targeting a total of one million Golden PowerPoint lectures from scientists worldwide within three years

The event was a celebration of the launch of The Science Supercourse
Amongst the 15 Eminent speakers were Prof. Vinton G. Cerf, Vice President and Chief Internet Evangelist for Google; Prof. Ronald Laporte, Professor of Epidemiology, Graduate School of Public Health, University of Pittsburgh and Prof. Gilbert Omenn, AAAS President, and Professor of Medicine, Genetics, and Public Health, University of Michigan.
750 participants attended the event.
Agriculture Supercourse Training Program:
Creating a Network for Agriculture Professionals
6-13 December 2009
Th workshop focused on training 10 Students of Agriculture to make the core database of the Agriculture deans and professionals. 509 contacts were collected as a primary input to the network.

Arabic Encyclopedia of Life

Arabic Encyclopedia of Life
On the 14th of December 2009, The Bibliotheca Alexandrina became a partner in the Encyclopedia of Life project when Dr Ismail Serageldin signed the MOU with James L. Edwards, Executive Director Encyclopedia of Life, National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution.
The Arabic EOL is funded by the Arab Fund for Economic and Social Development (Kuwait)
The project aims at documenting and listing all species present in the Arab region which will help preserve and benefit from these species.
It will also include translating the EOL portal and Biodiversity data into Arabic which will increase the scientific content in the world’s published scientific materials and the Arabic content on the web.

Pan Arab Biodiversity Conference
14-15 December 2009
The Pan Arab Biodiversity conference discussed various themes including:
- Arab Biodiversity Threats and Challenges
- Current Regional Effort for Biodiversity conservation
- Future Prospects for Arab Biodiversity Preservation
- Presentation of the Encyclopedia of Life and introducing the Arabic Encyclopedia of Life Project
The Conference was attended by 87 invited experts and scientists in Biodiversity all over the Arab World representing Bahrain, Egypt Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Sudan, Syria, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Kuwait, United Arab of Emirates, Iraq, Morocco, Tunis and Yemen.
Among the eminent speakers were Thomas Garnett, Director, Biodiversity Heritage Library (USA); James Edward, Executive Director, Encyclopedia of Life (USA); Cynthia Parr, Director, Species Pages Group, Encyclopedia of Life (USA); Ahmed Amri, Deputy Director, Biodiversity and Integrated Gene Management Program; Tony Miller, Director, Centre for Middle Eastern Plants-CMEP (UK).

Diabetes Supercourse
The project is a joined collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO) Collaboration Centre, University of Pittsburgh, supported by the World Diabetes Foundation (WDF).
Project duration was 2 years (from January 2007 till June 2009).
The First BA Regional Workshop on the Epidemiology of Diabetes & Other Non-Communicable Diseases
6-13 January 2009

The workshop discussed non-communicable diseases faced today and various research tools and prevention strategies to stand up against it.
37 young scientists from 17 different countries shared their knowledge.

Eligibility and Deadlines
1. Egyptian scholars who have earned their PhD within the past five years (following December 2004).

2. Applicants must hold a current position at a public/private academic or research institution in Egypt, and the research must be conducted in Egypt.
3. Currently engaged or can arrange to work on a joint research project with foreign counterpart(s) at a university or research center abroad.
4. Applicants must not exceed 35 years of age by January 2010.
5. Grant applications must be submitted online before 30 April 2010.
6. Have a valid Local TOEFL certificate with a minimum score of 500.
