The BA Documents 400 Postage Stamps telling the Story of the Egyptian Postal Services

The BA Special Projects Department and the Information Technology Sector has completed documenting the history of the Egyptian Post in the modern era, which is the oldest in the Arab region. The project is part of the ‘Memory of Modern Egypt’ digital project. The Project content is provided by a selected group of young researchers, under the supervision of Dr. Khaled Azab. The researchers gather all the information related to Egypt’s history, most significant Egyptian figures and events, from the rule of Muhammad Ali to date.
The Project documents four hundred postage stamps, documents and rare photos. Egyptian postal services date back to the Pharaohs’ era, who organized the transfer of mail externally and internally and used couriers walking along the banks of the Nile within the country and travelling abroad through the routes of convoys and army troops.
It is worth mentioning that the “Memory of Modern Egypt” is a definitive digital repository of materials documenting Egypt’s rich modern history, during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, through photographs, films, stamps, coins, newspapers, magazines, documents, and historic studies that were drafted specifically for the Project. The Memory is a joint endeavor between the BA International School of Information Science (ISIS) in charge of the technical part, and the BA Special Projects Department that is in charge of the scientific content.
The Project website will be launched on the internet in October 2008.
