The Fourth Egypt FIRST LEGO League

Posted on

Alexandria— Under the auspices of the Egyptian Ministry of Education and the Egyptian Ministry of Communication and Information Technology, the BA Planetarium Science Center (PSC) will organize the 4th Egypt FIRST LEGO League (FLL) national tournament at the BA on 28–29 December 2008. (

The PSC introduced to Egypt FLL competition in 2006. The FIRST LEGO League (FLL) is a result of an impressive alliance between FIRST and LEGO Companies. FLL is an international program for children ages 9-14. It combines a hands-on, interactive robotics program and a research presentation with a sports-like atmosphere. Teams consist of up to 10 members and focus on team building, problem solving, creativity, and analytical thinking, in addition to scientific advancement to solve the FLL challenge.

Every September FLL teams around the world are provided with the annual Challenge. The Challenge is based on a set of real-world problems facing scientists today. It has two parts: a robot game and a project. This year’s Challenge is the Climate Connections.

The national Egypt FLL 2008 will include 20 teams covering a number of Egyptian governorates, like Alexandria, Mansoura, Ismailia, Cairo and Assiut. Teams are informed of the challenge and invited to register for the national tournament during August and September of every year. In October, PSC distributes the challenge requirements received from the USA to all participating institutions. The BA will give professional training for 2 mentors to guide each team. Teams will then prepare for 8 weeks before the national competition. During the national tournament, teams present their research work and their programmed robots perform the required tasks. Their performance is assessed by the PSC selected judges in line with the FLL international set of regulations and criteria.

All participating teams receive trophies and prizes, but the first place winning team will represent Egypt in the international competition in the USA. Last year, although it was our second time to join the international competition, the Egyptian team won the 26 place in Robot Performance and the best Design Award.
