The Arab Federation for Libraries and Information (AFLI) Conference, in its 28th round, will be held in Grand Nile Tower Hotel, Cairo, Egypt, from 27 to 29 November 2017, in collaboration with the Egyptian Ministry of Culture, and in cooperation with the General Authority for National Library and Archives, the Egyptian Library Association (ELA). The title of the Conference this year is Social Media Networks and their effect on Information Institutions in the Arab World.

The AFLI Conference is attended every year by esteemed library and information science professionals and academics from Egypt and the Arab world, presenting their papers and researches, and sharing their initiatives and experiences in the various conference-related topics.

The Bibliotheca Alexandrina (BA), represented in the Arabic Library Standards, attends the Conference, exhibiting the first full translation of MARC 21 Format for Bibliographic Data in Arabic, in addition to the display editions of MARC 21 Format for Authority Data, MARC 21 Format for Community Information, MARC 21 Format for Holdings Data, and MARC 21 Format for Classification Data. This will take place in the Conference Exhibition, Booth 6.

MARC 21 Formats in Arabic adopts the original arrangement and typography of the English MARC 21. The translation is adapted to meet Arab cataloging rules, provided with examples emphasizing Arab practices. It also covers new cataloging standards, such as Resource Description and Access (RDA), when applicable.

It is worth mentioning that MARC 21 Formats are standards by which bibliographic information is documented in a machine-readable form. It is considered one of the most efficient systems in data creation and sharing. Hence, the Arabic translation benefits Arab catalogers, providing them with an international standard in their mother tongue.
