The Center for Documentation of Cultural and Natural Heritage Starts the Implementation of the Memory of the Arab World Project

Alexandria— The Center for Documentation of Cultural and Natural Heritage (CULTNAT) started the implementation of the "Memory of the Arab World Project" to enrich the Arabic heritage e-content on the internet, following the first meeting of the Preparatory Committee for the Implementation of the Memory of the Arab World Project held in Sharjah from 27-28 October 2007. The meeting was co-organized by the CULTNAT and the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology.

Dr. Fathy Saleh, Director of the CULTNAT, stated that this ambitious project seeks to launch a unified memory for the Arab World on the Internet and that the CULTNAT will undertake the implementation of the project in cooperation with the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology.

Several Arab institutions participate in the project, namely: Al-Neelain University and the Antiquities and Heritage Department in Sudan, Qatar Library for Heritage, the Lebanese University, the Center for Architecture Restoration and Heritage in Syria, the Andalusia Institute for Historical Heritage in Morocco, the Libyan National Committee, the Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO), the Palestinian National Committee, Qatar Institution for Heritage and Amir's Office of Historical Documents, the National Library of Kuwait, the Saudi Institution for Heritage, and the National Library in Mauritania.

It is worth mentioning that the CULTNAT had held a workshop in April 2007 at the BA to draft a plan of action for the Memory of the Arab World Project. The UNESCO had declared its participation in the project, as part of its Memory of the World Project launched in 1992.

The Project will be implemented in several phases. Phase I will be dedicated for the preparation of the project and will last for one year, the following three years will be devoted for the collection of tangible, civilization and oral Arab heritage.
