The Annual International Conference of the Egyptian Association of Cardiology discussed in Bibliotheca Alexandrina many recent researches and studies.

The main concern of the big medical gathering of both Egyptian and European doctors was recent diagnostic tools along with new interventional modalities in all fields of cardiology.

One of the important researches was addressed by Prof. Dr. Salah El Tahan, Cardiology Department (Alexandria University), about the use of intra-operation echocardiography in the cardiac and non-cardiac operations, its safety, limitations and complications. He also discussed the use of that technique in patients with rheumatic mitral stenosis operations (published in the Heart Journal in Texas Institute of Cardiology). In his second lecture, Dr. Tahan demonstrated the use of echocardiography in diagnosing cardiac sources of embolization whether thromler, vegetations, atrial septal diseases, intracardiac tumours and other cardiac lesions. Also the use of transesophageal echocardiography in diagnosis and management of young patients under the age of 45 years with cerebral embolization.

Dr. Ziyad from Chicago (USA) discussed pediatric cardiac catheterization in correction of coarctation of the aorta and use of different prosthesis.

It was shown that in Monofia University Hospital 6.6% of children below 15 years old suffers congenital heart diseases, 39% of them are due to consanguinity.

Psychological support of cardiac patients was high lighted in a joint study ــ between Napa Hospital (California), the National Heart Institute (Cairo) and the Physic Therapy Department (Cairo University) ــ as the relative support has a tremendous effect on the patients"" haemodynamics and the quality of life when in-patient treatment is over. Also the aerobics practice is important for physical fitness, cardioprotection and stress.

From Critical Care Medicine Department (Cairo University), a research showed that the technique of internal cardioversion is safe and successful way terminating A.F whenever external cardioversion fails, hinting at the role of low-dose Amiodarone therapy for facilitation of cardioverion.

The Medical Research Institute demonstrated the effect of mercury pollution in fluorescent industry on the cardiovascular system.

Another paper was based on a study of haemodynamic and some metabolic aspects of the myocardium in patients with cardiopulmonary Shistosomiasis.

High-risk patients bicarbonate hemodialysis were shown to do well compared to acetate hemodialysis, hence BHD is recommended to avoid serious arrhythmias.

A paper was presented by Dr. Shausaei, Nursing Department (Hamadan University, Iran) demonstrating the psychological problems of patients in pre-and post coronary bypass grafting surgeries.
