In the Thinking the Mediterranean Series
“Commercial Routes in the Mediterranean” in a Lecture at the BA

Alexandria— The BA’s Alexandria and Mediterranean Research Center (Alex-Med) will organize on Wednesday, 5 March 2008, the ninth lecture of the Thinking the Mediterranean series under the title “Commercial Routes in the Mediterranean”.

The Thinking the Mediterranean series was launched in May of 2006 and has so far brought together nearly twenty of the most prominent experts on the history and culture of the Mediterranean, as part of Ramses 2 Program.

Following the customary setup of the Thinking the Mediterranean series, the seminar will include two speakers representing the two coasts of the Mediterranean. Dr. Maria Christina Chatziioannou, Professor of History and Archaeology at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, will deliver a lecture under the title: "The Mediterranean and the Greek Entrepreneurs as Traders, XVIII–XIX c". Dr. Farouk Abaza, Professor of Modern and Contemporary History at the Faculty of Arts, University of Alexandria will speak on the subject of “Commercial Routes in the Mediterranean in the 19th Century and the Relationship between Egypt and the Mediterranean Countries”.

Dr. Maria Christina Chatziioannou is the Research Director of the Institute for Neohellenic Research, a branch of the National Hellenic Research foundation, and Coordinator of the Department of Social and Economic Research (17th–20th century). Her current research involves the multidisciplinary and comparative study of merchant networks and business enterprise in the Eastern Mediterranean and Great Britain.

Dr. Abaza’s work focuses on modern and contemporary Middle Eastern and Arab history and international relations as well as Ottoman history. He is a widely published authority on these subjects. Dr. Abaza is a Board Member of the Antiquities Association in Alexandria, the Egyptian Association for Historical Studies, the Federation of Arab Historians, and the Federation of Arab Archaeologists in Cairo.

The series of Thinking the Mediterranean presents two points of view on the Mediterranean; one from the north and the other from the south. These events are published on the Internet and broadcasted via several TV channels.

The lecture will start at 19.00 hrs at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, Lectures Hall.
