The Old Victorians celebrate the 100th anniversary

On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the establishment of the Victoria College, the Bibliotheca Alexandrina hosted the Old Victorians as well as the board of management of the school. The celebration witnessed the attendance of a large number of Old Victorians including a number of famous characters in the artistic, medical and academic field; Youssef Shahin the great director, Dr. Ahmed Hamada and the famous photographer Antoine Bassily. The celebration was accompanied by an exhibition where a special collection of photographs of the school, students and Queen Victoria were presented, in addition to a collection of simple gifts that were given to the old Victorians.

Dr. Mohamed Awad; head of the Old Victorians Association and donor of the “Alexandria through Ages” exhibition that is currently held at the Library, delivered the opening speech. Through his speech, Dr. Mohamed Awad expressed his deep gratitude and appreciation to Dr. Ismail Serageldin; director general of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina and the staff members who have contributed to the success of the ceremony. He also thanked members of the Board of management of the school for the efforts they exerted to develop and modernize the school. Dr. Mohamed Awad is considered one of the active graduates of the Victoria College.

Dr. Mohamed Awad talked about the history of the school; established in collaboration between the City of Alexandria and the British authority, is in turn considered to be one of the legends of Alexandria; one of the most distinguished and successful schools that has graduated a generation of creators and dignitaries.

Dr. Mohamed Awad then explored the Victoria College website that includes information about school since it was established as well as the most remarkable events, in addition to a large number of photographs of the students during the different stages of education. The website also includes an archive of the films shooted by Mr. Antoine Bassily about the school, as well as the complete collections of the magazines that were released by the school including the latest edition that was published on the occasion of this celebration. Dr. Mohamed Awad mentioned that the site includes a site for chatting that in turn gives the Old Victorians the opportunity to contact one another.



The active members of the board of management in addition to a number of distinguished attendants received commemorative medals.

A large number of honorable graduates of the Victoria College belong to the various fields such as politics, art, science, intellect and industry; including H.E King Hussein; Former king of Jordon, H.E King Simon; King of Bulgaria, Shady Abd El Salam, Omar El Sherif, Mansour Hassan and the families of Al Ghanems and Al Sabahs of Kuwait.
