Dr. Mostafa El-Sayed, Professor at the School of Chemistry and Biochemistry, Georgia Institute of Technology, USA, gives a Lecture entitled: “Beating Cancer Cells to Death with Gold Nanoparticles in More than One Way”, on Thursday, 23 December 2010 at the BA.

The lecture is organized by the BA Center for Special Studies and Programs (CSSP), in collaboration with the Academy of Sciences in the Developing World – Arab Regional Office (TWAS-ARO).

Dr. El-Sayed will shed light on the newest findings and techniques in using gold-nanoparticles in cancer treatment. They can scatter light very strongly and, if bound to cancer cells, they enable us to detect cancer. Depending on their size and shape , they can also absorb light very strongly and convert it into localized photo thermal heat that can melt attached cancer cells. Gold nanoparticles can act as drugs as well.

The Lecture is held at the BACC Great Hall at 2:00 pm.

The lecture is open to public, but a prior confirmation is required for attendance. Please send an email to Esraa.Ragab@bibalex.org with a copy to Israa.Elfayoumi@bibalex.org before 20 December 2010 to confirm your attendance.
