Call for submission of research papers in the peer-reviewed Memory of Arabs journal

On the occasion of the selection of Cairo by the Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO) as the capital of Islamic culture for 2020, the Bibliotheca Alexandrina Center for Islamic Civilization Studies announces the publication of special issues of Memory of Arabs journal, under the theme "Cairo: The Meeting Point of Cultures and Civilizations, from its Establishment to the Mamluk Era". Memory of Arabs is a peer-reviewed scholarly journal concerned with the cultural heritage of the Arab countries. It was first published by the BA in 2018, and is part of the “Memory of Arabs” project, affiliated with the BA Academic Research Sector.

The BA invites interested researchers to present new and creative research topics on “Cairo, from its establishment until the end of the Mamluk era”. The deadline for sending the full research is 30 October 2020. Research papers should be based on the following aspects:

 

  • Capitals of Islamic Egypt before the establishment of Cairo.

  • The mosque of Amr Ibn Al-Aas, and its educational role in the first three centuries of Islam.

  • The establishment of Cairo, and its civilizational role in the Fatimid period.

  • Al-Azhar mosque, and its educational role in the Fatimid period.

  • Cairo schools as a center for the transmission of science in the Ayyubid and Mamluk eras.

  • The Citadel of Cairo (Citadel of Salaheldin); the seat of government in the Ayyubid and Mamluk eras.

  • New studies in architecture and Islamic arts in Cairo.

  • Aristocratic districts in the Mamluk era (Berket El-Fil, Al-Azbakeya).

  • Economic and social life in Islamic Cairo, and the development of its institutions (agencies - khans - hotels - markets, craft and industry communities - institutions of a social nature - homes - bathrooms - hospitals).
