The Second Creative Forum for Independent Theater Groups closes at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina

Alexandria, 17 January 2005— The Bibliotheca Alexandrina (BA), on Wednesday 5 January 2005, concluded the performances of the Second Creative Forum for Independent Theater Groups (Europe-Mediterranean), organized by the Bibliotheca Alexandrina Arts Center (BAAC) for the second consecutive year with 14 Arab and European countries participating.
The Forum included 12 theater performances, 7 workshops on professional acting, roundtable meetings between independent theater groups in Egypt, Europe and the Mediterranean discussing theater and democracy with the aim of developing skills and abilities and to exchange experience among the groups.
Mother…I want to be a millionaire was one of the important performances by the Temple Independent Theater Group. The performance shed light on the world we are living in through its character, Hasan, and his dreams of winning a singing competition to become a rich and famous singer. The performance takes us through the dreams he lives in, versus reality, where we find that the line dividing dreams and reality disappears and with it the realistic view of the future.
There were many other lectures, during the Forum, discussing theater arts, amongst which was a lecture by Marika Hedemar, from Sweden, analyzing the dance performances from a choreographical point of view, where she presented a model for developing the vision and the deep understanding of the dancing performances.
A book was released by the Forum organizers, presenting the contemporary independent theater groups and their initiation. Dr. Mahmoud Abou Doma, Director of the Programs Unit in the BAAC, mentions at the beginning of the book the three main fundamentals of the forum; theater performances, training and experience exchange among participants, and discussions and lectures.
The book sheds light on Egyptian independent groups such as the Workshop Group which began in September 1987 and presented Dayer Dayer. As well as the Movement Group which was founded by Khaled El Sawy, the writer, director, and actor in 1989, and attracted audiences and critics through its performances Mazad, Le’b Fe El Demagh and movies Wady El Malh, El Hob, Masrahey Men Thalath Fosool.It also gives a general idea of the cultural organizations that support independent theater groups.
Finally, the book closes with its call for BA to continue its support of the Forum and act as the window through which audiences can watch the latest creations of the independent theater groups in the Mediterranean.
