“Photographing the Invisible” Lecture

Within the activities of the Alexandria Project, the BA holds on Sunday, 23 February 2014, a lecture entitled “Photographing the Invisible” by Photographer André Pelle, who is specialized in Archaeological Photography at the Centre d’Études Alexandrines (CEAlex).
The lecture explains the new photography technique that was used in the CEAlex Photography Campaign from autumn 2011 to spring 2012, and marked a real resurrection of the invisible paintings in Kom El-Shoqaffa, for the results allowed a redefinition of the icons and an exploration of the set of colors used.
André Pelle is a pioneer of photographing invisible antiquities. Since 1990, he photographs maritime archeology around the Pharos of Alexandria. He received a Patent Right for his ultra-violet work that led to a breakthrough in explaining Greco-Roman paintings on walls, for this technique made visible what was invisible for the human eye. Because of his work, several of the archaeological sites have been revisited and restudied. Pelle held several photography exhibitions and has several publications in addition to archeological documentaries.
The lecture is held at 12 :00 noon at the BACC Lecture Hall, and is open for public. It is given in French, and simultaneous translation into Arabic will be available.
