Two lectures Celebrating Shadi Abdel Salam at the BA

Alexandria— In celebration of Shadi Abdel Salam’s anniversary, the BA Arts Center is organizing two lectures on Monday, 17 March and Tuesday, 18 March 2008. The first lecture is entitled “The Age of Tutankhamun” by Dr. Mohammad Saleh followed by a screening of the film Korsi Tutankhamun (Tutankhamen’s Chair); and the second lecture is “Story-telling in Ancient Egypt” by Dr. Abdelhalim Nureldine, Professor of Ancient Egyptian Language, Faculty of Antiquities, Cairo University, and Adviser to the BA Director, followed by a screening of the film “The Eloquent Peasant”.

Shadi Abdel Salam was born on 15 March 1930 in Alexandria. He graduated from Alexandria Victoria College in 1948. He studied Art Theater in London, 1949/1950, and graduated as an engineer from the College of Fine Arts, in Cairo, 1955.

He worked as an assistant to Egyptian architect and designer Ramses Wassef in 1957. He also designed set decorations and costumes for some famous historic Egyptian films, such as Wa Islamah, Almaz wa Abdu Al-Hamouli, and Naser Salah El Din. In addition to working as a historic scenes and costume adviser for Polish movie “"le pharaon", directed by Kawalerowicz.

He directed the long drama entitled “ The Mummy” 1968/1969 and received numerous awards for this work. He also directed the short drama “The Eloquent Peasant” and wrote the scenario of the long dramatic film “Akhnaton”.

On 8 October 1986, director Shadi Abdel Salam passed away before the film “Akhnaton” was released.

The lectures will start at 18:00 hrs at the BA Conference Center, Small Theater.
