BA Celebrates International Museum Day 2017

Posted on

Within the framework of the 2017 International Museum Day (IMD), which is celebrated on 18 May each year, all BA museums will offer free entry to visitors today.

On this occasion, the Manuscript museum had also organized a workshop titled: “Museums: The Memory of Peoples”. The workshop aimed to introduce children to the roots of their history in a variety of fields and teach them about the role of museums in preserving heritage. It included visiting all museums within the BA premises to offer the participants the opportunity to explore the most important displayed items. The workshop also included lectures on museum rules and a practical workshop where each participant designed a brochure for the BA museum s/he visited.

The Sadat Museum, which is affiliated with the BA Manuscript Museum, will celebrate the IMD by organizing an open, free of charge competition where all visitors shall answer a questionnaire and 10 winners will then be chosen and given awards. The museum will also provide its visitors with information on the IMD, offer them guided tours, and screen the President Anwar al-Sadat Culturama show.

It is worth mentioning that celebrating the IMD started in 1977 under the sponsorship of the International Council of Museums (ICOM). The theme of the 2017 IMD is “Museums and Contested Histories: Saying the Unspeakable in Museums”. It focuses on the role of museums that use their services to benefit societies and, thus, become hubs for promoting peaceful relationships between different peoples. This theme also highlights how the acceptance of a contested history is the first step toward envisioning a shared future built on reconciliation.
