The BA Sustainable Development Studies, Youth Capacity Building, and African Relations Support Program organized a webinar entitled “Sustainable Development Goals in the Aftermath of the Coronavirus Pandemic” on Monday, 15 March 2021, at 2:00 pm.

The event was inaugurated by Dr. Moustafa Elfeki, Director of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, and Dr. Hala El-Said, Minister of Planning and Economic Development. It was moderated by Ambassador Nada El-Agizy, Head of the Sustainable Development Department at the Arab League.

A host of experts in the field of sustainable development took part in the event, including Mr. Osama El-Gohary, Head of the Egyptian Cabinet’s Information and Decision Support Center (IDSC), and Dr. Hussein Abaza, Sustainable Development and Green Economy Counsellor.

Dr. Elfeki said that this event comes as part of the BA continuous efforts to provide its cultural services remotely to the public amidst the general lockdown brought about by the coronavirus pandemic. He noted that this lecture is among a series of webinars organized by the BA to discuss the most recent developments regarding COVID-19. Previous webinars addressed several topics on the environment, data and science, and artificial intelligence.

Dr. Hala El-Said pointed out that the coronavirus pandemic negatively affected the entire world and shook the global economy in a way that surpassed the crisis of the Great Depression in 1929. She said that the internationalist goals of sustainable development suffered immensely, including those that focused on combatting poverty, healthcare, good education, and decent labor.

Additionally, she emphasized that substantial efforts are being exerted with regard to Egypt’s development strategy, in spite of the global challenges encountered as a result of the pandemic. She indicated that Egypt was ranked 83rd worldwide in the Sustainable Development Report published by Cambridge University Press, as opposed to being ranked 92nd in the 2019 Report.
