“The Historical Role of the Coptic Orthodox Church” in a Webinar at the BA

The BA Center for Coptic Studies organizes the second lecture of its 12th cultural season, entitled “The Historical Role of the Coptic Orthodox Church in Africa”, delivered by Dr. Joseph Ramez, Professor of African Studies at the Institute of Coptic Studies. The lecture is held online, on Sunday 23 January 2022, at 2:00 pm.

The lecture highlights the historical role played by the Coptic Orthodox Church in Africa, and tackles its relationship with North Africa and Sudan, as well as the Ethiopian and Eritrean Churches. It also examines the Church’s role in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, together with its relationship with Zaire (The Democratic Republic of the Congo) and Southern Africa, especially after the establishment of the new Coptic Eparchy in South Africa in 2019. Additionally, the lecture discusses the Coptic Church’s relationship with several countries in Southern Africa, such as Zambia, Zimbabwe, Namibia, and Swaziland, along with West African countries, including Nigeria, Ghana, Cameroon, Côte d'Ivoire, and Togo.
