"The Means of Writing Preservation" in an International Symposium at the BA

Senghor University in Alexandria, in partnership with the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, is organizing, the second edition of the International Symposium "From Stone to Paper, from Paper to Digital" with the sub-theme: "What are the Means of Writing Preservation?" from 28 to 30 November 2022.
The large number of manuscripts and documents, mainly in Arabic, non- Arabic, Persian and Swahili languages, together with the wide prevalence of conservation projects and research elements, provide several tools, which aim towards a critical thinking of the African culture, with all its various religious, historical, legal or geographical components. An insufficient framework for the protection of these collections, in addition to an economic potential that is still under-exploited, make it difficult to preserve the written heritage and stop the acts of plunder that affect the countries of the South. Faced with this reality, can digital technology be a solution for the safeguarding of endangered written heritage?
The Symposium welcomes students, researchers, teachers, civil society members, as well as interested persons from the public and private sectors, who are concerned with the various topics of heritage preservation.
This second edition is sponsored by the Gandur Foundation for Art, the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, ICCROM's Youth.Heritage.Africa program, and Institut français d'archéologie orientaleIFAO, and the Agence universitaire de la Francophonie (AUF).
The opening session: Monday, 28 November 2022, from 4:30 pm to 6:00 pm – BA Main Building – Reading Area – First Basement (B1).
The Conference days: Tuesday 29 and Wednesday 30 November 2022 - Paul Desmarais Conference Hall, Senghor University in Alexandria.
