Vinton Cerf: All the World´s Libraries at our Fingertips

The Bibliotheca Alexandrina, a beacon of knowledge of international scope and ambitions, aspires to be a place for dialogue, learning and understanding. Bibliotheca Alexandrina intends to be one of the leading institutions world-wide to contribute towards the knowledge society and to promote science and technology through intercultural dialogue. Towards this goal, ISIS is organizing a series of lectures, given by a group of eminent speakers, on information and knowledge society that will be chaired and organized by Dr. Hisham El-Sherif.

The series started in May 2004 with the first lecture given by Vinton Cerf, the Senior Vice President of Technology Strategy for MCI, widely known as one of the “Fathers of the Internet”. He discussed Internet and digital libraries, the effect of search engines and un-structured data with some speculations about Sir Tim Berners-Lee’s semantic web.

Another session on “Building a Digital Library of the Middle East” was held at the BA on the 16th of January 2006. The session was given by John Gage, the Chief Researcher and Vice President of the Science Office for Sun Microsystems.
