A Billion Light Years of Empty Space

28 August 2007
Astronomers discovered a vast void in the Universe, nearly one billion light years across, empty of both ordinary visible matter such as stars, galaxies, and nebulae, and the mysterious, invisible "dark matter". Previous studies have revealed holes, or voids, in the large-scale structure of the Universe, but this new discovery is far larger in size.

A Wonderful View of a Saturnian Ring

27 August 2007
NASA recently published an exquisite Cassini spacecraft image showing Saturn's F ring, shining in scattered sunlight, and Saturn's second largest moon Rhea (1,528 km across).

Three Decades of Solar System Exploration

22 August 2007
On 20 August 1977, NASA launched its highly successful Voyager 2 spacecraft, on a grand tour through the outer Solar System. About two weeks later, Voyager 2's companion,Voyager 1, spacecraft was launched toward Jupiter. This week, NASA celebrates the 30th anniversary of the start of the Voyagers' odyssey.

Perturbing Saturn's Rings

21 August 2007
NASA recently published an exquisite image of Saturn's magnificent rings, acquired by the Saturn-bound Cassini spacecraft. Prometheus, Saturn's small, intriguing moon, is visible as a bright dot skimming the narrow F ring.

Observing Twilight on a Saturnian Moon

20 August 2007
NASA recently published a fascinating image of Titan, Saturn's largest moon. The image was acquired by the Saturn-bound Cassini spacecraft on 29 June 2007. Titan (5,150 km across) shone as a glowing ring, as it was occulting (eclipsing) the Sun.

A Wonderful Comet-Like Star

18 August 2007
NASA's Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) spacecraft recently spotted a fantastically long comet-like tail emanating from a giant star. The star, known as Mira (Latin for "wonderful"), belongs to a category of old stars, termed red giants. These stars blow massive amounts of their material into space. Mira is dashing through space at a supersonic speed. It has intrigued astronomers for about 400 year
