Abstract: In this paper Both ENDS and their partners from South Africa, Colombia and Indonesia examine the social and environmental impacts of coal mining. These countries are the major sources of the coal used in the Dutch energy sector. Coal mining causes amongst others large scale deforestation, acid mine drainage which pollutes fresh water sources and (forced) displacement of communities.
