Mortality is of course the severest complicaton of all and is dramatically increased in both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. The accompanying slide shows the mortality of a cohort of Type 1 diabetic subjects originally diagnosed in childhood in Pittsburgh. As can be seen, mortality rates approach 6% per year after 37 years of childhood onset diabetes, when the current age of the population would be in their young 40’s.
