International collaborations provide opportunities for addressing common epidemiologic questions in aging research using unique resources. For example, there is collaboration on a study based on 1,800 magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans. Subjects were 65 to 75 years of age, non demented, and were participating in already existing studies of cardiovascular disease or neuroepidemiology. Baseline risk factors data were collected 15 to 5 years prior to enrolment into the study and associations assess. The Nippon-Honolulu-Seattle (Ni-Hon-Sea) Study is identifying whether rates and causes of dementia are the same or different across countries and cultures. If the rates are different, efforts will be made to discover modifiable risk factors.

The PROVA Study of Italy is an observational study designed to depict the causal pathway from disease to disability in a representative group of 3000 older Italian men and women. This study had a special focus on the synergism between cardiovascular and osteoarticular diseases. Also, ILSA has already completed two follow-ups of a nationally representative cohort of 5,600 individuals 65 to 84 years old. Investigators are assessing a variety of hypotheses and comparing to US studies.
