The Greeks in Egypt – From Alexandria to the Fayum

4 – 12 November 2012

German Archaeological Institute, Cairo -

Bibliotheca Alexandrina, Alexandria

University of Alexandria

This Winter School, held in Alexandria and the Fayum Oasis, will provide an introduction to the study of Greek culture in Egypt relating to the archaeological, literary, and papyrological evidence from the Ptolemaic and Roman periods.

Classes will be taught on the art of the Greeks in Alexandria, on science in its theoretical and practical aspects, on script and on literature; the focus will be on the particular situation in which Egyptian and Greek cultures met, and their impact on each other.

In Alexandria we will visit the splendid sites and collections of art of the Ptolemaic and Roman periods; moving to the Fayum, we will try to find out what of the “Greek culture in Alexandria” found its way into the oasis.

Papers will illuminate the textual evidence from the ancient villages, in particular finds of literary texts in the Egyptian/Greek villages of the Fayum. Sites will be visited to create an overall picture of what can be known from the texts as well as from the exacavations.

Advanced Students and post-docs of Greek Papyrology are invited to participate; students of Classical Archaeology are welcome, as long as they have a good command of ancient Greek.

Each student is expected to contribute to the programme with a 30 minutes paper on a subject to be decided according to the special skills of the student.

The School is free, but participants are expected to cover their travel expenses to and from Cairo. The number of places is restricted to 14. Classes will be taught in English. A solid knowledge of the Ancient Greek and English languages will be required.

Arrival day is November 4, departure day November 12, evening.

Applications should contain

1. Curriculum Vitae

2. two references from teachers, who should also
