   Biography

Dr. Yang received his Ph.D. from University of Copenhagen, Denmark, in 1988. As the co-founders of BGI, he and his collaborators have made a significant contribution to the HGP and HapMap projects, as well as to the sequencing and analysing genomes of rice, chicken, silkworm, giant panda, cucumber, and many microorganisms. BGI and collaborators published the first Asian’s genome, human pan-genome, human ancient genome, and human gut metagenoms recently. Dr. Yang has received many awards and honors, including Research Leader of the Year by Scientific American in 2002 and Award in Biology by the Third World Academy of Sciences(TWAS)in 2006. He was elected as a foreign member of EMBO in 2006, and an Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2007, and a fellow of TWAS in 2008.

  Abstract

Sequencing and Genomics in the "Century of Biology"
Sequencing might be regarded as the most important technical breakthroughs in the first decade of the 21st Century in genomics, and its impact has extended from genomics to the whole field of life sciences. In addition to its previous contribution to the HGP and HapMap projects, and to the rice, silkworm, chicken, and many microbial genomes, BGI (formerly Beijing Genomics Institute) and its collaborators have published the sequencing and analysis of the first Asian genome, human pan-genome, human gut metagenome, human ancient genome, as well as cucumber and giant panda genomes recently with its improving sequencing platform and innovative bioinformatic tools for the NGS. As one of the most influential genomics centers in the world, BGI is now actively involved in initiating and carrying out internationally collaborative projects on the 1000 human genomes, cancer genomes, 1000 animal and plant genomes, as well as 10,000 microbial genomes, with emphasis on the important biological issues in collaboration with its partners in various fields of life sciences all over the world. Sequencing and genomics will surely contribute to the “Century of Biology” and the future is now.
