«Hwn nTry, iwaw nHH»: Some Astronomical Hieroglyphs and their Cosmographic and Calligraphic Significance

Abstract

In the course of time the ancient Egyptian Hieroglyphic Writing was substantially transformed, as every other scripture does, due to various socio–cultural and linguistic reasons. Eventually new signs came into use or devised, based on more ancient archetypes, whose very conception was an outcome of the immediate ambience of the Egyptians. Some of them feature a clear cosmovisional meaning and their symbolism is related to either astronomical or cosmographic notions. As each hieroglyph (phonograms, but mainly semograms and taxograms) was the carrier of some appropriate semantics, similar was also the case for these «cosmovisional» hieroglyphs. In this paper an attempt is made to study their evolution and significance, starting from a certain group of signs (namely C199-C204, C296-C297 & C314) [cf. Grimal, Hallof & van der Plas, 1 1993: 1C-6; Grimal, Hallof & van der Plas, 2 2000: 1C-4, 1C-5, 2C-8]. The example of these hieroglyphs, that depict Nūt with a scarab ( xprr ), personification of the newly born morning Sun, and/or a divine baby/youth ( Hwn nTry ) between her and the earth, carrying also a certain solar symbolism [cf. BM 552 , VIII , pl. xxvii ], are examined and their astronomical and cosmographic semantics are studied. Although these were signs mainly used at a later period, they do incorporate several notions that date since many centuries earlier. Some remarks on their aesthetic appearance and their subsequent calligraphic function are also given. We conclude that these signs, their form and their meaning being always deeply interlaced, present us with vivid paradigms of how important astronomical and cosmovisional notions (that are also discussed here) can be communicated through the vehicle of rebus and symbolic writing, although in a pre–scientific level.

Hieratic writing. (Calligraphy study).

Ancient Egyptian hieratic handwriting is the primary archaeological artifact that the Egyptians left for us to know about them. To date, most work on ancient Egyptian writing has concerned decipherment into modern languages, which remains a valued endeavor and still requires our attention.

Calligraphy is also available to us as a valuable tool to study temporal, social, and regional variation, but in its present level of analysis, much of this information goes sadly undetected and when detected is not explored scientifically. The lens of analysis needs to be focused more clearly on the basic elements of handwriting to reveal these components. By developing increasingly sophisticated means of calligraphic studies, we may even glimpse beyond the linguistic thoughts of the past into the subconscious elements to be found in how a particular scribe held his or her brush and the angle and length of particular brush strokes. For the past six years, the Hieratic Font Project has been at the forefront of this research. This paper will present the findings to date and the future directives of that research.

The role of writing in establishing cultures and creating dialogue among these cultures.

When one breaks down handwriting into its constituent components of individual brush strokes, connecting marks and turning traces, the distinctions of conscious meaning break down. In their place, the subconscious elements of schooling, individual temperament, and condition of the moment come into focus to reveal the human individual, as if arising from the mask of society. It is in this realm that we may speak of the positive role of writing in establishing cultures and particularly in creating dialogues among these cultures, for writing reveals the individual subconscious on a mass cross-cultural scale. When compared across cultural and temporal boundary lines the collective force of the entire corpus of handwriting reveals the commonality of humanity, as we strive for survival, purpose and meaning in a world that is often vague and unpredictable. This paper will present a blueprint for exploring how these subconscious elements are revealed in ancient Egyptian handwriting and provide concrete examples.

"Space Syntax and Metre in some early Phoenician inscriptions held to be written in scriptio continua. "

From the 19th century CE on, many Phoenician inscriptions, which were written in linear alphabetic scriptio continua, were found and subsequently published. Most of them were too short to reveal anything about the scribal attitude that lies behind their making. But some famous inscriptions, like the Yeh9awmilk stele or the Karatepe inscriptions, are of considerable length. Although these important royal inscriptions are public display texts, their scribal line seems not to be perfect, but has occasional spaces (spatia) that interrupt the fluent scriptio continua. Because most northwest Semitic scholars concentrate on contents, text, grammar or, as far as it is possible, paleographic typology, and ignore questions of penmanship in the early first millennium BCE, such inscriptions were considered as to be written in slightly irregular scriptio continua by maybe distracted or untrained scribes or masons.

A new study of such texts as deliberately formed, separate linguistic entities has also to keep in mind their written and maybe, despite their now often torn surface, once calligraphic form of public presentation. Methodologically starting from the assumption that ancient scribes knew exactly what they were doing and deserve the highest respect as trained specialists in their field, the research will show that occasional spaces in some early Phoenician inscriptions formerly held to be written in irregular scriptio continua are not placed by chance.

Though often whole phrases of this inscriptions are strictly written in scriptio continua, occasional spaces mostly are to be found at the end of phrases and only between words, but never within a word itself, revealing that there is a system of ,space syntax', which chiefly depends on metric rules. As this kind of metre has only few in common with classical metric rules, it often can be compared with the mechanics of ,oral poetry' all over the world. Supposed disruptions of scriptio continua in some royal Phoenician inscriptions must be considered vestiges of a ,petrified' vocal score for their oral performance. Further observations will show that nevertheless there is no pressure imposed by some system, but that a scribe had the freedom to evade metric phraseology for orthographic reasons.

New methodological insights concerning the development and interdependence of scriptio continua and the competing dividing systems of spaces and word dividers in northwest Semitic epigraphy of the 1st millennium BCE will be the consequence

"The Avesta Manuscript"

Abstract :

In this essay, the Avesta Language (in general and abstract forms) and its manuscript called "Avesta manuscript or Den-Dipirih" (Avesta means religious handwriting) will be focused on. Avesta Language refers to one of the most ancient near eastern civilizations in Western Asia .

The Avesta manuscript is one of the most complete and subtle handwritings invented so far. It lacks the problems existing in all other manuscripts. This handwriting, being used to write the holy book of Avesta, according to many researchers, was invented around the 6 th century A.D., towards the end of the Sassanids, from Pahlavi manuscript, being derived from Aramaic handwriting. The necessity to record the Avesta hymns was the major motive for creation this manuscript that contains none of the Pahlavi handwriting inadequacies. It's simple to pronounce a text accurately once it's written with this language.

I will also shed some light on Anquetil du Perron, the founder of Avestalogy, as well as, the origin of Avesta manuscript, how it looks like, and relevant important and special matters.

The hieroglyphics and the Moretti's sign "Curva"

(means curved)

G. Moretti was the founder of the Italian graphology, the science of handwriting, which understands the writer's personality by his writing.

His graphological method is based on many graphic signs, but mostly he emphasizes the vital strength; each of us was born with his own vital strength, which is different from each other ones. The vital strength is the instinct of expansion. There is also the instinct of self-preservation.

For Moretti "Curva" is the sign expressing the instinct of expansion, "Angolosa" (means angular) is the sign of the instinct of self-preservation.

But.when was "Curva" born?? Who were the first people using "Curva" meant as the curved graphic movement?

Ancient Egyptian used that movement, writing different hieroglyphics.

The relationship between the Hieroglyphic systems of Egypt and the Maya

I'll start with a general introduction on the profound structural similarities between writing systems in general, then focus on Maya specifically.  I have long been struck by the fact that the inventors of writing, whoever they are, invariably settle on the same set of general solutions to visually representing speech.  Only the details are different.
Chinese has the most unique design; it appears to have a greater difference from other writing systems than they do from each other.  But it still is inherently a system of logograms, replicating speech patterns, made useful only by a heavy infusion of phonetic signs.  Even English writing has a striking number of non-alphabetic characters and structures; the basic keyboard, in addition to the 26 letters, has about 20 logographic keys (including determinatives).  I don't know these statistics for Arabic keyboards.  But also, when you analyze the psychology of reading, it is clear that our brains (whether English or Arabic) process words as wholes -that is, as logograms- rather than analyzing them into their component strings of phonetic sounds.

I shall try to address these topics in my talk.

  1. Evolution and development
  2. Patterns of calligraphy
  3. Mutual effects
  4. Aesthetics of calligraphy, particularly the interaction between aesthetics andtechnique.
  5. Content of inscriptions
  6. Important issues
  7. Modern research fields
  8. The scientific term in calligraphy and writing
  9. Writing tools
  10. The relation between form and content
  11. Symbols of writing
  12. The modern techniques and research related to the formations of calligraphy

'LOST LANGUAGES: THE ENIGMA OF THE WORLD'S UNDECIPHERED SCRIPTS'

Maybe it is the possibility of 'speaking with the dead', of hearing the voices of long-silent peoples and civilizations. Perhaps it is the puzzle-solver's relish for the challenges posed by breaking codes. Whatever the reasons, undeciphered ancient scripts have long tantalized both scholars and the general public. 'Lost Languages', based on my recent book Lost Languages ( New York , 2002), will describe, with illustrative examples of ancient scripts, the challenges posed by archaeological decipherment. Both successful decipherments, such as that of the Egyptian hieroglyphs in the 1820s, of the Linear B script of Greece in the 1950s, and of the Mayan script of Central America in the last few decades, and potential decipherments, as yet unachieved, such as that of the Indus Valley script of India/Pakistan, of the Meroitic hieroglyphs of Sudan, and of the rongorongo script of Easter Island in the Pacific Ocean, will be mentioned. The aim will be to interest not specialists in decipherment or in particular languages but anyone who is interested in how to interpret ancient scripts.
