Workshop "Al-Mu'izz Li-Din Allah Street in Cairo: Its History and Monuments"

Workshops from (8/3/2025) to (8/5/2025)

The BA-Center for Islamic Civilization Studies, affiliated to the BA-Academic Research Sector, in collaboration with the Youth Library at the BA-Libraries Sector, is organizing a workshop titled "Al-Mu'izz Li-Din Allah Street in Cairo: Its History and Monuments," from 3 to 5 August, 2025, from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM, at the BA-Conference Center, Meeting Rooms (B) and (D).

The workshop will address the historical and architectural development of Al-Mu'izz Li-Din Allah Street, one of the most important historical streets in Islamic Cairo and the largest open-air museum of Islamic monuments in the world. The street stretches from Bab al-Nasr and Bab al-Futuh in the north to Bab Zuweila in the south, passing through historic neighborhoods such as Al-Nahhasin, Bayn al-Qasrayn, Al-Sagha, Al-Jamaliyya, and Al-Ghuriya. The street was initially established as a residential area for the Fatimid caliphs, then evolved into a major commercial and architectural hub due to the expansions of caliphs, sultans, and princes over the centuries. It is home to several significant architectural landmarks from the Ayyubid, Mamluk, and Ottoman eras, including the Al-Hakim Mosque, the Al-Aqmar Mosque, the Mosque of al-Mu'ayyad Sheikh, and the schools of Qalawun and Najm al-Din Ayyub.

The workshop will feature a group of specialists from the BA-Center for Islamic Civilization Studies. Each day of the workshop will focus on a different historical period of the street:

Workshop Program:

  • Day 1 (3 August): Dr. Mahmoud Megali will present “Al-Mu'izz Street in the Fatimid and Ayyubid Periods”.
  • Day 2 (4 August): Dr. Shereen El-Kabbani will present “The Processions of Sultans and Princes on Al-Mu'izz Street”.
  • Day 3 (5 August): Dr. Radwa Zaki will discuss “The Development of Al-Mu'izz Li-Din Allah Street in the Mamluk Era”.
