The Bibliotheca Alexandrina, through the Center for Islamic Civilization Studies and the Writing and Scripts Center at the Academic Research Sector, in collaboration with the Institut Français d’Archéologie Orientale (IFAO) in Cairo and the Faculty of Archaeology, Ain Shams University,
is organizing the Second International Seminar on Arabic and Islamic Inscriptions, to be held on 15–16 April 2025, under the title: "Orientalists and the Emergence of Arabic Epigraphy from the 19th Century to the Early 20th Century". The first day of the seminar will take place at the IFAO headquarters in Al-Mounira, while the second day will be dedicated to a field visit in Cairo.
This seminar highlights the contributions of European scholars and orientalists to the study of Arabic and Islamic inscriptions, through 14 academic papers presented by researchers from Egypt, France, Switzerland, Morocco, and Iraq. As part of the seminar’s program, a special session will be held under the title: "Recent Projects for Documenting Arabic and Islamic Inscriptions."
In addition, an exhibition will be held on the sidelines of the seminar, entitled: "The Craft of Epigraphic Inscriptions: Between the Reed Pen and the Chisel – The Private Collection of the Al-Sufi Zadeh Family."
