How Our Health Depends on Nature: A Lecture by Dr. Eric Chivian

Most attention paid to the loss of biodiversity has focused on the expected ecological consequences, or on the aesthetic, ethical, sociologic, or economic dimensions of this loss for human beings. The implications for our health are rarely considered. This is a serious problem, for not only are the full human impacts of biodiversity loss failing to inform policy decision makers, but the public, lacking an understanding of the health risks involved, is not grasping the magnitude of the biodiversity crisis and not developing a sense of urgency about addressing it.


The Bibliotheca Alexandrina hosts "Famelab" competition, 18 December 2010

On Saturday 18 December 2010, for the second year in a row, the Bibliotheca Alexandrina (BA) is hosting more than 120 competitors from Alexandria and other governorates to participate in Famelab, a competition organized by the British Council and the Ministry of High Education and Scientific Research Program of Research, Development and Innovation. This competition aims at communicating scientific issues and thoughts to the public in a simple way through different media.


Intel Science Competition-Arab world (ISC-Arab)

Intel science competition - the Arab world (ISC-Arab) gives students the opportunity to compete with the best of their counterparts in the Arab world. And the competition is considered the first science exhibition in the Arab world, it will be held in Bibliotheca Alexandrina from 7th to 9th December 2010.

Pyramids Building Techniques

The Planetarium Science Center is organizing an event entitled “Le Genie des Pyramides” (Pyramides Building Techniques) on Friday, 29 October 2010, that aims to explain different theories of pyramids construction with different materials.


A Successful 2nd General Assembly Meeting for NAMES reinforces the Network’s status on the international arena

The four-year old North Africa and Middle East Science centers network (NAMES) held its Second General Assembly Meeting, NAMES 2010, on 16 17 October 2010. The hugely successful event was hosted by The Scientific Center of Kuwait (TSCK), under the leadership of Mijbil Almutawa, Chairman and Managing Director of TSCK. Almutawa was elected President of NAMES in the Board of Directors Meeting that followed the conference; he will be serving as such for a term of two years, ending in November 2012.


PSC Activities in the IYA2009 Final Report

A 1300-page final report for the International Year of Astronomy 2009 was released at the European Week of Astronomy and Space Science in Lisbon, Portugal. The report shows that at least 815 million people in 148 countries participated in the world’s largest science event in decades.


Summer Closing Festivity 2010

To celebrate the completion of the Summer Program activities, each year, the PSC team organizes a festivity for all participants of the Program that includes speeches, competitions, and a summary of the Program activities and their results, presented by the students themselves. Certificates of Recognition are also awarded to outstanding students, as well as the PSC volunteers.

The Bibliotheca Alexandrina (BA) has the honor of hosting the 20th International Planetarium Society Conference (IPS2010), taking place for the first time in Africa and the Middle East at the BA Conference Center in Alexandria, Egypt, in the period 26-30 June 2010.
