The alpha-synucleinopathies include the most common neurodegenerative diseases that occur late in life. They involve lesions of filamentous aggregates that are basically variations on amyloid. Plagues are built up of different components, and their protein sequences are different, but they have a shared mechanism of fibrillization, and all go on to form amyloid deposits.
