Influenza virus was first isolated from horses in Czechoslovakia in 1956 providing the prototype strain: A/eq/Prague/56 (H7N7). It is still used in some vaccines.
Since chilling weather was followed by many cases of influenza (always!) perhaps some such horses are silent carriers.
