In 1990, in Europe the Saint Vincent Declaration (SVD) was signed. This was signed by diabetologists, health care professionals and by a number of individual governments of European countries. The SVD set several goals which included reduction in the incidence of diabetic blindness, amputations due to diabetes and coronary heart disease. A declared aim was that pregnancy outcome of diabetic women should approximate that of nondiabetic women. At the time the SVD was signed, there were no population based registries for diabetic pregnancy outcomes. However the aspiration based on the state of knowledge at that time seemed to be readily achieved.
