During the 2nd & 3rd weeks postinfection, dogs either develop a strong immune response and recover, or have a weak response and become moribund or die. In dogs that fail to recover promptly, infected lymphocytes and macrophages carry the virus to surface epithelium of the alimentary, respiratory and urogenital tracts, and on to the CNS.
