In 1837 Benjamin W. McCready reported on the public health problems existing in N.Y.C. at that time. His views were refined and restated by Dr. John H. Griscom in his famous 1842 book The Sanitary Condition of the Laboring Population of N.Y., one of the most influential public health documents prior to the Civil War.
