FIGURE: Administrative Units (89) of the Russian Federation, 1993)

The Russian Federation currently consists of 21 autonomous republics, 55 Russian regions (including 6 "krais"), 10 autonomous districts and 2 cities, Moscow and St. Petersburg, which have the legal status of Russian regions. Together, they make up 89 constituent administrative units of the Russian Federation. Many of these units are little known outside Russia, even though several are bigger than many European countries.
