Life expectancy for men in 1980 declined to 62.2 years from 67 years in 1964 (Feshbach, 1982b). Average number of annual deaths per 1000 males increased steadily from 8.9 in 1970-1971 to 9.7 in 1974-1975 to 11.1 in 1980-1981. The rate of increase was slightly less for women (Feshbach, 1985b; Moscow Executive Committee, 1991).
