Present studies related to health care practices for persons with diabetes indicate that many are not screened for early signs of complications. Also, it is estimated that at least half of those with diabetes do not know they have the disease. As part of The Diabetes Connection project, a yearly screening is conducted for those at-risk and those with diabetes. This is a massive undertaking and requires the coordination of the chair and involvement of committee members and many health professionals. Through the first two screenings (1998 & 1999) many people were screened for complications that would normally have no means for this free assessment. Also, approximately 24% of those screened at-risk were determined to need further testing to establish a diagnosis of diabetes. Results from the first two screenings indicate that there has been improvement in those with diabetes as reflected by laboratory testing results.
