Other: A Visit from the Collegi d’Arquitectes de Catalunya (COAC)


On 5–7 December 2006, a group of architects from the Collegi d’Arquitectes de Catalunya (COAC) headed by Professor Anotoni Vilanova, visited the Bibliotheca Alexandrina. Dr Mohamed Awad lectured the group on the architecture of the city of Alexandria. The main target of their visit was to learn about conservation problems in Alexandria and examples of conserved buildings in the city. The group was given a guided tour by members of Alex Med’s Architecture Unit and the director, Mohamed Awad. Sites visited included the Kordahi Villa, the August Perret Villa, the cemeteries, Montazah Palace and gardens, the Alexandria Center of Creativity, the Greek Patriarchate and the Swedish Institute. They also toured the Turkish Town of Alexandria and Terbana and Shorbagui Mosques. In addition, a guided tour of Qaitbey Fort was given by archeologist Jean-Yves Empereur, Director of the Centre d’Études Alexandrines.
