Center for Special Studies and Programs (CSSP), a research center established in July 2003 in the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, aims to play a significant role in the progress of science and technology in Egypt. Advances in the Management of Cancer - A Canadian Perspective

The Center for Special Studies and Programs (CSSP) is organizing a conference entitled "Advances in the Management of Cancer - A Canadian Perspective" that will be held on 27 February 2011, at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina.
 
This Conference aims at providing a multidisciplinary approach in cancer management from a Canadian perspective to surgical, radiation, and medical oncologists as well as allied healthcare workers.
 
Four visiting Canadian professors from all disciplines will be presenting.
 
Places are limited to 100 participants and they will be selected to join the conference according to their profiles.
 
Deadline for application is 15 January 2011.
 
On the sidelines of the Conference, a one-day workshop will be held and it will cover case studies in multidisciplinary approaches in cancer, with a special emphasis on head and neck, ENT, breast and gastro-intestinal cancer.
 
Only 50 of the 100 applicants of the conference will be chosen to take part in this workshop and selection will be based on the applicant's profile and his/her submitted case study.
 
Application criteria for the conference and the workshop:
The applicant should be:
1. An Arab national citizen.
2. MSc or PhD student, or post-doctoral researcher, working in the field of cancer.

For the workshop, the applicants are required to submit a case study.

The First International Conference for Young Scientists & the Inaugural General Assembly of The Global Young Academy (GYA)

 21-23 March 2011

The Center for Special Studies and Programs (CSSP) in collaboration with the Global Young Academy (GYA) are organizing The First International Conference for Young Scientists & the Inaugural General Assembly of The Global Young Academy (GYAGA-2011) at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina.

The conference will be held under the theme The Role of Young Scientists in Global Sustainable Development.

Participants will include the members of the GYA, composed of future scientific leaders nominated by their national academies, and other invited delegates, such as representatives from global and regional academies such as IAP, IAMP, NASIC, ALLEA, TWAS, policy makers, observers, and media representatives. The event, focusing on global sustainability, will include invited presentations, panels and round table discussions. Other subjects will be discussed in the framework of the GYA goals and the efforts advanced by the GYA's working groups.

The objective of the conference is to launch new collaborative projects, programs and develop policy statements on:

  1.  Empowering young scientists to overcome challenges of early career research.
  2.  Early career development for young scientists.
  3.  Role of science in solving societal challenges and involvement in global politics.
  4.  Expanding the roles and creation of national young academies.
  5.  Inter-disciplinary research for global and regional sustainability and welfare such as water resources, policies and investments, Energy, Biotechnology, Nanotechnology, Green technologies, Environment and Pollution, Future of interdisciplinary climate change research.
  6. Review and approve the GYA constitution, proposals, activities and administrative plans of GYA.
  7. Election of the new Executive Committee of the GYA.

BioVision-Lilly Award in conjunction with TWAS

BioVision-Lilly Award in conjunction with TWAS

Deadline for Application:  15 January 2011

The BioVision Lilly Award, in conjunction with TWAS, the Academy of Sciences for the Developing World, will honour outstanding scientific achievements made by individual young scientists from developing countries.

The prize will reward three young scientists living and working in a developing country, who have a track record of excellent research in infectious diseases, with an emphasis on tuberculosis preferred, and promise to have a positive impact in the developing world.

Candidates should be nationals of a developing country, under 40 years of age and hold at least a PhD degree with an outstanding academic background.

Three winners will be selected and invited to attend
BioVision 7th World Life Sciences Forum (Lyon, France, 27-29 March 2011)

TWAS-ARO 6th Annual Meeting

The Academy of Sciences for the Developing World - Arab Regional Office (TWAS-ARO) held its 6th annual meeting on 22 December 2010 at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina.

The theme of this year's meeting was "Linking Research Institutions, Universities, and Industry in the Arab World". About 317 participants attended the conference, including 82 students and 93 academics. This year the meeting featured 11 renowned speakers who gave presentations on different topics related to the theme of the meeting.

A closed meeting for the TWAS-ARO members was held on 23 December 2010 to discuss the activities of 2010 and the future plan of the Regional Office. The meeting was chaired by Dr. Adel El Beltagy.

The Academy of Sciences for the Developing World-Arab Regional Office (TWAS-ARO) is pleased to congratulate Prof. Elias Baydoun on winning the TWAS-ARO Regional Prize 2010 and Dr. Ramy Aziz on winning the TWAS-ARO Young Arab Scientist (YAS) Prize 2010.Prof. Baydoun

Prof. Baydoun is a Professor of Biology at American University of Beirut and secretary general of the Arab Academy of Sciences. He won TWAS-ARO Regional Prize 2010 “Public Understanding and Popularization of Science” for his outstanding effort in facilitating science communication to the public in the Arab Region, through publications, lectures and other means. The winner was announced during TWAS annual meeting, 19-22 October 2010, Hyderabad, India, and the prize was awarded on 22 December 2010 during TWAS-ARO 6th annual meeting.

Dr. Ramy is a lecturer of Microbiology and Immunology at Faculty of Pharmacy, Cairo University and an Dr. Azizadjunct faculty member at San Diego State University, San Diego, CA, USA. He won TWAS-ARO Young Arab Scientist (YAS) Prize 2010 for his various contributions and efforts in the field of “Biodiversity Conservation and Informatics”. This topic was chosen as 2010 was the International Year of Biodiversity (IYB). The winner was announced after the meeting of the YAS prize evaluation committee which was held on 23 December during the TWAS-ARO 6th annual meeting at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina.
