International Day of Astronomy
07 May 2009

The International Day of Astronomy is a movement designed to share the joy of astronomy with the general public under the theme "Bringing Astronomy to the People." On Astronomy Day, thousands of people who might have never looked through a telescope actually get an opportunity to see firsthand what so many amateur and professional astronomers see and are excited about.

On 7 May 2009, the PSC has celebrated an International Day of Astronomy, where PSC specialists conducted a number of astronomical interactive games, as well as a lecture given by Dr. Fathi Saleh, Director of the Center of Documentation of Cultural and Natural Heritage (CULTNAT), to fulfill the international purpose of the event and to answer the students questions.

At the end of the event, practical astronomical observations have been conducted at the BA Plaza, aiming at introducing children to the telescope; its components and how it is used in astronomical observation. The children have observed the moon using the telescope, in order to explore its surface, with its different valleys, mountains, and meteorite craters. In fact, seeing the moon through the telescope is considered one of the most amazing landscapes.

Astronomy clubs, science museums, observatories, universities, planetariums, laboratories, libraries, and nature centers hosted special events and activities to acquaint their public with local astronomical resources and facilities. Many of these events were located at non-astronomical sites; such as shopping malls, parks, urban centers; thus, truly “Bringing Astronomy to the People”. Generally, it is an event that helps highlight ways the general public can get involved with astronomy, or at least get some of their questions about astronomy answered.
