Coins and Poetry (C.P. Cavafy)
16 Mar 2009 - 18 Mar 2009

It  surveys the poet’s relation to history, and in particular to coins. In his poems, the renowned poet C.P. Cavafy often made reference to historical personalities depicted on coins. The exhibition shows Cavafy’s historical poems, as well as original ancient Greek, Roman and Byzantine coins that relate to the personalities referred to in these poems.
Our aim in holding this event is to further strengthen the dialog that has been going on about the history of coins and banknotes, recognizing the different inscriptions and writings on coins in the world. A key objective of the exhibition is to reassemble coins that have been dispersed in public collections throughout the world, such as the Numismatic Museum of Athens, the Benaki Museum of Athens and Hellenic Ministry of Culture.
