The workshop will cover the following points:
• The point of studying Meroitic in Egypt
• Historical outline of the Meroitic scripts.
• Methodology of Decipherment.
• The linguistic family of Meroitic and its relation to Nubian languages.
• Cursory sketch of Meroitic grammar.
• Meroitic glossary: local vocabulary and loan-words from Egyptian.
• Typology of Meroitic texts: Funerary inscriptions, royal chronicles, religious scene captions, magic texts, …etc.
• King Kharamadoye’s inscription from Kalabsha : historical context, initial protocol, hypotheses on the content of the text.
• A field trip for practical training.
Course Fees: 300 L.E. for Egyptians/ 150 USD for non-Egyptians.
