Rainbow over the Bibliotheca Alexandrina

On Tuesday, 12 December 2006, a powerful rainstorm occurred in Alexandria, in the afternoon. The storm lasted over one hour. Heavy rain ended at about 15:25 EET.

A glamorous rainbow gleamed while the storm was subsiding.

Mr. Aymen Ibrahem, PSC, Senior Astronomy Specialist, observed the entire storm from the Bibliotheca Alexandrina Plaza. Ibrahem reported that the rainbow grew rapidly, forming a huge arc in the sky, directly opposite to the Sun, and lasted for about 7 minutes. Ibrahem took many photos of the rainbow, showing its development.

"A week earlier, I observed a considerably weaker rainstorm, hoping to photograph a rainbow, but actually I experienced my first tornado", said Mr. Ibrahem. "Now I realized my object, with a bonus rare tornado".

Ibrahem's photos of the tornado were published by five international publishers, and stimulated a worldwide interest.
