As part of Alexandria’s ongoing celebrations of its rich history and to affirm its status as a vibrant, cosmopolitan city, Eng. Ayman Attia, Governor of Alexandria; Dr. Abdel Aziz Qonsowa, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research; and Dr. Ahmed Zayed, Director of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, visited the exhibition “Twenty Years of Excavations at Shallalat Gardens (2006–2026),” organized by the Library’s Antiquities Museum in collaboration with the Hellenic Research Institute of Alexandrian Civilization to highlight an important aspect of Alexandria’s history across the ages.

Excavations conducted by the Hellenic Research Institute of Alexandrian Civilization revealed new evidence regarding the history and geography of ancient Alexandria. The exhibition presented the major discoveries that were made over the course of two decades of archaeological research at Shallalat Gardens in Alexandria, shedding light on the geography of the ancient city in all its historical stages.

Highlights included a Hellenistic statue, likely of Alexander the Great; the remains of a massive public building; a section of the major Roman road L2; a section of the Hellenistic Royal Road R1; and a large underground tunnel. These discoveries provided significant new evidence with regard to the topography of Alexandria’s Royal Quarter.

The exhibition offered new insights into the historical development of one of the major ancient cities in the Mediterranean region and underscored the importance of long-term archaeological research in reconstructing its past.
