Influence of the Alexandrian Philosophical School on Islamic Philosophy

Objective:This course aims to study how knowledge was transferred from the ancient schools of Alexandria to the Islamic world, and how Arabs related to the knowledge of Alexandria through a translation project from Greek into Arabic.

Content: The course deals with Arabic knowledge that was influenced by its Hellenistic counterparts during Middle Ages and Renaissance. Hence, the course will discuss the Greek commentators on Aristotle in the School of Philosophy in Alexandria, the transfer of Alexandria School’s philosophy to the Islamic world, the concept of philosophy in Islam, the impact of Alexandria School’s philosophy on Islamic philosophy, and Islamic Sufism. This is in addition to the study of some of the most important Muslim scholars influenced by the Alexandrian philosophical school, such as Al-Kindi, Al-Farabi, Ibn Sina, Al-Ghazali, and Ibn Rushd.
