HE Mrs. Suzanne Mubarak Inaugurates the Dialogue among People and Cultures in the Euro-Mediterranean and Gulf Areas Conference at the BA

Alexandria— HE Mrs. Suzanne Mubarak, President and Founder of the Suzanne Mubarak Women’s International Peace Movement, will inaugurate the Third Conference on the Dialogue among People and Cultures in the Euro-Mediterranean and Gulf Areas, hosted at the BA, 19–21 January 2008.

HE Ambassador Aly Maher, Director of the Institute for Peace Studies (IPS), stated that in a world swarming with conflicts, confrontations, and attempts to falsify the message of civilizations, the IPS is honored to organize the Third Conference on the Dialogue among People and Cultures in the Euro-Mediterranean and Gulf Areas. He added that several prominent figures will participate in the Conference, including His Royal Highness Prince Hassan bin Talal, Moderator of the World Conference of Religions for Peace (WCRP) and Chairman of the Arab Thought Forum; HE Abdel Rahman Ben Hamad Al Attiya, Secretary General of the Gulf Cooperation Council; Mr. Federico Mayor, President of the Foundation for a Culture of Peace, Spain; Mr. Jorge Sampaio, UN High Representative for the Alliance of Civilizations, Portugal; Mr. Ahmed Abul Gheit, Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs; and Ministers from France, Greece and Slovenia, which currently holds the presidency of the European Union.

HE Ambassador Aly Maher added that the Conference is divided into six workshops on Cultural Fractures, Interreligious Disputes, Social Modernization, Education, Shared and Common Values. As part of the Conference, a session will be held on the Impact of Dialogue and Cultural Interaction on the Resolution of Conflicts, and speakers will be BA Director Ismail Serageldin, Egypt; Cengiz Aktar, Director of the EU Research and Documentation Center at the University of Bahcesehir, Turkey; and Laila Takla, Chair of the Board of Trustees of the UN Human Rights Technical Cooperation Programs, Egypt. Another session will address the Mediterranean Union Project Debate, French President Nicholas Sarkozy's proposal, and speakers will be Lucio Guerrato, Director of the Anna-Lindh Foundation, Sweden; Ambassador Jacques Huntzinger, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, France; and Ahmed Maher, former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Egypt.

Ambassador Aly Maher stated that, at the closing of the Conference, a final declaration will be issued entitled “Alexandria Declaration” mapping a plan of action on means of supporting the continuity of dialogue among cultural institutions, civil society organizations, and senior officials.

It is worth mentioning that the First and Second Conferences and Cultural Workshops on the Dialogue among People and Cultures in the Euro-Mediterranean and Gulf Areas were held in Paris in September 2006 and in Seville in June 2007 respectively, with the participation of former French President Jacque Chirac, HE Mrs. Suzanne Mubarak, along with other Arab, European and Turkish senior officials. The IPS was selected to host the Third Conference, in appreciation of the role played by HE Mrs. Suzanne Mubarak, Chairperson of the IPS Board of Trustees, in disseminating the culture of peace and in founding the first movement promoting the role of women in peace in the Middle East.
