Dr. Bashar Awad Marouf a Resident Scholar at the BA

The BA sixth round of the Resident Scholar Program will host Dr. Bashar Awad Marouf, during the period from 10 to 19 August 2008, to deliver several lectures on Arabic Manuscripts.
Dr. Bashar Awad Marouf will give his first lecture on Sunday, 10 August 2008, under the title “Hadith and History: A Study of Methodological Influences”; the second lecture on Tuesday, 12 August 2008, entitled “Approaches to Manuscript Authentication: Text Editing and Commentary Writing”. On Thursday, 14 August 2008, Dr. Marouf will deliver his third lecture titled “The Historiography of Baghdad”, and the fourth lecture “Shamsul-Din al-Dhahabi” will be given on Sunday, 17 August 2008. Dr. Marouf’s last lecture will be delivered on Tuesday, 19 August 2008, entitled “Education in Baghdad until the End of the Abbasid Period: Means and Methodologies”.
As part of the BA’s interest in arts and sciences that enrich humanity, and its aim to revive the spirit of the Ancient Library of Alexandria and its scientific and cultural role, the BA Manuscripts Center organized the Resident Scholar’s Program (RSP) following the tradition of the Ptolemaic Rulers, who established the Ancient Library. Ptolemaic Rulers followed a tradition of hosting distinguished scholars from all over the world at the Library to disseminate knowledge, develop arts and sciences, and render Alexandria an eternal beacon for thought and knowledge.
The Manuscript Center adopted this program of hosting distinguished scholars and specialists in heritage at the BA. During his/her stay at the BA, the resident scholar meets with specialists on daily basis to ensure the spread of knowledge from a generation to another. The resident scholar during his/her two week stay gives lectures to the public. The Center documents these lectures on CDs, which are made available to the public at the cost price.
